Native American Heritage Month

Throughout November, KBDI is proud to celebrate the culture and contributions of the First  Americans. KBDI's special line-up of programs showcase Native America's rich cultural heritage and reverence for nature; profiles distinguished individuals; and revisits historic sufferings, devastations and ongoing battles. Watch for these programs:

Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action
10pm Saturday, November 5
Nearly all Indian nations sit on land threatened by ruinous environmental hazards: toxic waste, strip mining, oil drilling, and nuclear contamination. HOMELAND takes a hard look at these realities.
 
True Whispers... Navajo Code Talkers
10pm Saturday, November 12
This film tells the stories of the young Navajo men recruited into the Marines during World War II to transmit unbreakable code in their native language while in the midst of combat against the Japanese.
 
Aleut Story
9:30pm Sunday, November 13
This poignant, richly textured film recounts the rarely told story of indigenous Alaskans' forced internment during World War II (where an estimated 10 percent perished) and their subsequent fight for civil rights.
 
People of the Morning Star
8:30pm Saturday, November 19
This is a story of the Northern Cheyenne's attempts to save their vanishing language, culture and way of life while, at the same time, trying to carve a future in the midst of 21st Century challenges.
 
Songs of the Spirit
7pm Sunday, November 20
R. Carlos Nakai, Joanne Shenandoah and Bill Miller, today’s premiere Native-American performing artists, join the New Mexico Sym-phony Orchestra to honor the nation and the spirit of those who were its first inhabitants.
 
Walela: Live In Concert
9pm Sunday, November 20
This high-definition performance program features 11 songs written and performed by the members of this very talented trio who bring together the genres of pop, folk and Native-American music.
 
Alcatraz Is Not An Island
10pm Sunday, November 20
In 1969, a small group of Native-American students claimed Alcatraz Island. This film recounts the historic retaking of Indian land for the first time since the 1880s and its political ramifications.
 
A Tattoo On My Heart: The Warriors of Wounded Knee 1973
9pm Sunday, November 27
This film recounts the Siege at Wounded Knee in 1973, telling the dramatic story through the words of those who struggled for survival inside the bunkers and ravines.
 
Journey of Sacagawea
10pm Sunday, November 27
The teenage Sacagawea, who with her infant son accompanied the Lewis and Clark Expedition, is an historical icon. This program seeks the woman behind the icon, showing how cultures and events shaped her life.

Sally Wicks

Sally J. S. Wicks has been with KBDI for over five years. She originally began as Assistant Program Manager and was recently promoted to Programming Communications Manager. She came to KBDI from WTIU in Bloomington, Indiana where she worked as Traffic Director. Her favorite thing about KBDI? Its relationship with its members.
