New Digital Viewer of Colo SpgsPosted: January 14, 2010

I am very glad to finally get all 3 of your digital channels (over the air) on 31.3, 31.4, & 31.5. I been an interest viewer on your analog, chan 32 version of KBDI. I really like Friday night with "Colorado Inside-Out" and "Independent Thinking." Unlike RMPBS, I those programs help me keep up with what's happening in Colorado. I also like your diverse programming. I think I will like your "Documentary Channel." I got engrossed in the "Steinway Mansion" this morning. Great history. Three channels, and all in English (for the most part). Thanks.
KBDI Response:
Dear Frank, Thanks to the Channel 9–donated analog transmitter saving us at least $20,000, the overcoming of complications with FCC filings, as well as resolving other technical challenges we are now delighted to have a digital signal in the Colorado Springs area! It has felt like a long time coming but we’re up, and our signal and reach will be better than ever. Sincerely, Pamela
Canadian Health Care MisrepresentationPosted: December 7, 2009
by Diane Lucas, MD
Program: Independent Thinking
Congratulations KBDI! you have now stooped to the level of trash radio, saving me the money I had considered sending in for support. I can get this kind of garbage on the radio for free anytime! John Caldara, in his latest foray into health care policy, did a show in which he clamed to have traveled to Canada, the only evidence of which was two film clips with improperly treated Canadian women. There were no film clips of the thousands of uninsured Americans being treated in animal stalls in a barn in Appalachia by an American nonprofit which was formed to treat the poorest people in third world countries. This show was quite remarkable in that it compared the worst of the Canadian health care system with the best of the American system. One out of every 5 Colorado adults and one out of every 8 Colorado children has no access to health care except through an expensive emergency room, yet no mention was made of that fact! 100% of Canadians are covered, even if they do have to wait in line, triaged according to severity, for underfunded services. Certainly, the Canadian system is not perfect, as it is underfunded, but more than 90% of Canadians want to keep it, and I've yet to find a single Canadian who would trade it for our system. Here the majority, even of Republicans, want major change. The Canadians spend half of what we do and have better health outcomes than we do. Of course, none of that was mentioned on the show! The guests referred to Canadians who died for lack of health care. Really? How many of them? We are the only developed country in which people die for lack of access to health care, 45,000 of them annually. But the guests and Mr. Caldara are apparently unaware of that. They also referred to people spending their savings and selling their homes to get health care in Canada. Really? But there was no mention of the 700,000 bankruptcies in this country every year due to medical bills, or the large number of Americans who become homeless every year due to illness. Mr. Caldara was fortunate enough to get an MRI the next day when he needed one. I wonder how long he would have waited if he had been one of the 47,000,000 Americans without health isurance? Until he died, probably... Ms. Gorman made note of the Canadians with money who come here to purchase treatment. Exactly what the wealthy do here, I would point out. Mr. Caldara wined about the Canadian woman who lost her job because of an untreated back problem. It sounds as if she was treated quite unfairly by the system. But was there any mention of the hundreds of thousands in the US who lose their work because of untreated medical problems under our system? Ms. Gorman mentioned the disaster that is the Massachusetts system. That's true. An insurance mandate in which the government bankrupts itself subsidizing the purchase of for profit insurance. How stupid is that! Mr. Laugesen kept referring to the medical tourism industry which brings Canadians here for treatment because of waiting lines in Canada. Is he not aware that close to a million Americans each year engage in medical tourism to Mexico, India, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapur and a host of other countries for everything from dental care to heart surgery, because their own country does not consider health care a human right? Health care as a human right was stipulated by the United Nations sixty years ago. Apparently we are the only "developed" country unwilling to recognize that. Mr. Laugesen mentioned a gorilla in Rocky Mountain Zoo who received a free CAT scan and ear surgery because of the abundance of medical care available here. "Apes in the US get better care" than some people in Canada, he stated. True, unfortunately. Did he forget to mention the human child who went deaf recently from untreated ear infections here in Denver, or did he just not know about her? I do contest the guests characterization of the waiting times in Canada. Testimony at the recent Congressional hearings on health care disputes the widely publicized extensive wait times in Canada. Canada does have a shortage of MRI and CAT scanners. Our waiting times for most other procedures are longer here than in Canada. I just waited 11-1/2 months to see a specialist in Denver, and I routinely wait 4 months to see another specialist. And I am insured and a physician! Ms. Gorman contests that only in a for profit system of health care is there an incentive to hold prices down. Really? Then why haven't we seen anything but double digit price inflation in our for profit system? The fact is that health insurance costs in Colorado have risen three times the rate of wage growth in the last few years, and she should know that. And so, Mr. Caldara concluded by trying to twist the arms of his guests until they would concede that "Obamacare sets us on the road to Canadian type care." Really, Mr. Caldara? The Canadian system couldn't be much further from Obamacare, but for people who don't bother to take the time to find out, "government health care is government health care", even though the public option as currently proposed won't even cover 2% of the population. Isn't it really time to stop the fifty year old arguments and misinformation and tell it like it is? Information at www.pnhp.org and www.healthcareforallcolorado.org. Shame on you, KBDI for letting this level of misinformation broadcast on PBS!
Lies from Independent Thinking "Examining Canada’s Single Heath Care System"Posted: December 4, 2009
by Jerry Suits

Only an naive person would believe the lies these three people are telling. The right wingers interviewed selected Canadians to tell their story. Here is a scientific way to handle this situation. Randomly select people rather than only selecting 2 or 3 people out of millions of Canadians. For every story they dug up in Canada, I can tell you 10 stories here in the USA. A woman in Loveland, CO (USA) was diagnosed with cancer. She was told that her health insurance was dropped. Even though she was a red neck woman who always voted Republican-- she was angry. She said of the American health system (and ring-wing politicians): "Lies, lies, lies, ... there all a bunch of lies." She died of cancer an angry woman about a month later. There are thousands of examples of people denied health care. Some people are denied health care because health providers will not take their particular health insurance. What about all of the people who have gone bankrupt trying to pay their insurance bills and medical bills? People are watching 3 biased persons on TV-- they never talk about the health bills that people who get MRIs here and incur a bill they can never pay. If these 3 people on this show are getting paid by the health industry, then I can understand why the spread lies. Radio 850 KOA is a right-wing station. They like to distort and amplify the truth. Sincerely, Jerry
