As someone that loves to cook, I have found that a quick web search will usually lead you to the recipes for most shows, however, in some cases you may need to purchase the DVD.  I searched the PBS website and while they have a lot of Jacques Pepin DVDs but I didn’t see one on Jacques and Julia.

I find the tone of your email concerning.  What?  Have you never had a lawn mower break down, a car not work, or some project not go as planned?  Well, it happens here also.

Apparently there were technical difficulties taking those programming feeds which resulted in an early morning programming change. Those series come to us via MHz Worldview, which is broadcast 24/7 on our 12.3 channel, which has had no permanent changes to their programming lineup. The problem results from when those programs are simulcast onto 12.1. I am currently monitoring the signal and can verify that the intended programming is going to air on 12.3….so that would be the best option to check 12.3  if this happens again.  If you are interested in the international programming offerings, this would be of primary interest to you as the schedule consists mainly of news programming from around the globe.

The next time to catch NHK will be at 2:00pm this afternoon on 12.3.

I know!  Being in a television market with two PBS stations, we are subject to rules restricting our usage of programming from the National Programming Service of PBS.   Unfortunately, these rules prevented us from airing the State of the Union speech coverage which came as part of the PBS Newshour series…one of the many series made extremely difficult to carry by the regulations. (PBS requires us to air it on a 12 hour delay…as in “yesterday’s news” …forget it!...right?)  We had absolutely no way of getting a satellite feed of the coverage outside of this.  (Incidentally, last year, PBS gave a special dispensation to allow stations like us the opportunity to cover the inauguration…which we did.)

A better question would be: Why didn’t RMPBS / KRMA / Channel 6 carry it?  I for one would have watched it. The Newshour frequently has some of the best coverage anywhere of events like this.

RMPBS / KRMA / Channel 6  had the broadcast rights, the satellite feed and they still opted to carry alternative programming…including a political interview with Hillary Clinton for 1 hour, a move I find even more curious.

We were able to air a special broadcast of Studio 12  [our own production] giving a roundtable discussion of the State of the Union, as well as additional coverage on our other news shows,  but I share your pain, and the overall embarrassment for public broadcasting in the state of Colorado….and the rest of the Union…  What a shame.

Unfortunately our broadcast rights from the BBC are very specific and are for only one telecast of each episode.  It does not appear that we could stream the episodes online.  But this was a wonderful suggestion, and I truly appreciate hearing from our passionate EastEnders fans.

Thanks for your feedback.  The reason we aired BLACKING UP: HIP-HOP’S REMIX OF RACE AND IDENTITY at that time was so that it could be paired with an episode of AFROPOP that also focused on hip-hop.  You might be happy to know that we have BLACKING UP scheduled to repeat on April 24 at 8pm.  Hopefully you can catch that airing.

Q.  Why don’t you continue airing EastEnders five days a week? 

A.     KBDI-Channel 12 receives only two episodes each week from BBC.  We had a backlog for awhile and that’s why we aired it every day.  Now that we’re getting caught up, we will air the two episodes that they give us each week.  BBC is the distributor and they make the decision about how many episodes are distributed to licensees.

Q.  Why are your episodes years behind?

A.  Again, our ability to broadcast EastEnders is lashed directly to the BBC’s release of episodes via satellite this side of the Atlantic.  Once the BBC broadcasts an episode of EastEnders in the U.K., they wait to release episodes into the U.S.  For example, the episodes coming off of the satellite this Monday and Tuesday apparently were broadcast overseas back in 2003.  Unfortunately, this is the BBC’s choice, and completely out of our control.

Q.  If you were able to air five days a week before, why don’t you air five days a week now?  And, why don’t you repeat episodes?

A.  The BBC feeds 2 episodes almost weekly (104 per year) for our use. In exchange, we pay more than $8000.00 per year for the broadcast rights to air each episode once.  Since our initial decision to carry the series on KBDI back in 1985, we had gradually fallen further and further behind the BBC’s 2 per week schedule. This created technical and thematic problems.

From a technical viewpoint, shelves and shelves were piled high with outdated and nearly extinct tapes. (Do you still listen to 8 tracks and audio cassettes?  Most of TV isn’t done on tape anymore either. ) On this almost vanished format, EastEnders queued up for their place in the schedule. From a content viewpoint, combining the BBC’s delay with ours yielded absurd references to Margaret Thatcher (in office as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom until 11/28/1990) even though Prime Minister Thatcher had not only been succeeded by John Major, but also by Tony Blair by our broadcast date.

You may recall that in September of 2007, we implemented a temporary scheduling shift to five times a week at midnight to attempt to catch up.  Now we have caught up. The episode that will be shown tonight came off of the satellite feed on June 8th -- 11 days ago.  Next Friday’s won’t be recorded until the afternoon of Tuesday, June 23rd -- 3 days before air.  You can see that this pattern is unsustainable; we simply cannot continue to play out 5 while receiving 2.

Q.  Why don’t you move it to 12.2 for an even better viewing time?

A.  Until cable and satellite providers carry all of our channels, only a fraction of viewers can watch the great documentary programming you mention on 12.2. A slightly larger fraction of viewers are able to enjoy the fantastic 12.3’s MHz Worldview international programming.  Moving EastEnders to 12.2 would mean that 85% of our viewers could not watch the series.

Q.  Why are you changing to 10 p.m. on Sunday? It’s not a good time for me.

A.    It’s not possible to select a time that works for all of our viewers.  If 10 p.m. on Sunday isn’t a good viewing time for you, we hope that you will be able tape the episodes for viewing at a more convenient time.

Q.  My sister in Florida is getting Eastenders and it is about 2 years ahead of us...and my mom in New York is about 1 year ahead. Is Denver ever going to catch up!?!

A.  With our past backlog, it’s plausible that viewers in other locations were ahead of us in the past.  Since we are now catching up with PBS’ BBC feed, we now should be on the same timeframe.      

Q.  I’m glad you have my name as an EastEnders viewer and am curious about others you might have on a list.  Have you ever thought about bringing together EastEnders viewers to an event?  I would enjoy meeting other EE fans.

A.   Yes, this is something we’ve thought about.  Stay tuned.  I am a relatively new EastEnders fan.  If you would like to help in the planning of such an event, please let me know.

Nope…that’s probably something on TV Guide’s end in relation to the listings of digital channels after the whole country made the transition from analog last June. I will follow up with my contacts in the listings are to see if there is something that can be done to resolve the situation.

I believe the episode you are referring to was the 15th episode in the fourth season.  Unfortunately, this episode was not among the top 28 episodes that was selected by viewers for the marathon.  (You are correct, by the way, about the name of the song in the episode.

I have no idea what the problem was.  When you wrote me, I looked and everything was gone.  I then posted a new board – and it didn’t show up.  I posted again, same thing. A third time, same thing.

I appreciate your comments, while I do not agree with them.  We seek to provide quality programming serving the underserved.  The one hour of quality medical care question and answer session Hablemos de Salud, certainly fits that bill. Although, we will take your feelings into consideration then next time we restructuring the Saturday afternoon lineup.

The 12.2 problem is something that we are looking to correct in the near future.  The Documentary Channel has moved to airing product infomercials which we must cover over with to meet FCC guidelines as part of our non-commercial status.  We are investigating many different programming options to address the problem.

We are glad that you have enjoyed the series and hope that you take time to vote for your favorite episodes for the 20-episode marathon that will air over three days starting on Thanksgiving day.

I am really interested in helping you find a title for the music selection…however, you are correct the credits don’t specifically identify the musical artists. 

I did find this blurb on the web, though:

Thank you for your e-mail about EastEnders.  I, too, am an EastEnders fan and would love to see more episodes. J  However, that just isn’t possible since we receive only two episodes each week from BBC.  We had a backlog for awhile and that’s why we aired it every day.  Now that we’re getting caught up, we air the two episodes that they give us each week.  BBC is the distributor and they make the decision about how many episodes are distributed to licensees. 
 
I am going to paste a Q&A below that I wrote some time ago about the change from 5 days a week to two episodes a week.  It may provide additional background for you about one of your favorite shows.

By the way, if you sign up as a fan of KBDI-12 on Facebook, you might enjoy reading comments in the EastEnders Discussion page from our other EastEnders fans – and perhaps you might want to post a comment yourself!  This is something that we started just about a month ago.

Charlie Rose continues to air the repeats of Charlie Rose at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  However, since a contractual clause does not allow us to repeat a program later than 48 hours after we first broadcast it, we can no longer repeat the Friday program on Monday afternoons.

I certainly understand your frustrations.  Here’s the deal:  We have 3 channels: 12.1 [PBS and local programming mix]  / 12.2 [Documentary Channel] / 12.3 MhzWorldview Int’l programming

Direct TV carries 2 of the 3…12.1 and 12.3…..Unfortunately, Our 12.3 [Mhz Int’l programming] is called 12.2 on their system.  So of course, the programming never aligns.

Our 12.2 channel is currently available only to our over the air viewers. We hope to have our Comcast / Dish / and Direct TV viewers help us get carriage for all three of our services.

I hope this helps. Sorry for the frustrations.
