To learn more about podcasting, see below. |
What is Podcasting?
Podcasting combines the terms iPod and broadcasting to describe a new kind of radio for your computer and MP3 player. Some have described podcasting as a kind of TiVo for audio on the Internet.
Podcasts are "feeds", similar to RSS Feeds, which allow special software – often called a podcatcher – on your computer to download audio and video programs from the Internet automatically.
The programs in these feeds can be played right on your computer. They can also be transferred to a portable device such as an iPod or other media player. You can then listen to the program anytime you like, wherever you like.
How do I get started?
Here's what you'll need: a computer, an Internet connection, an MP3 player (if you want to take it with you) and some free podcasting software. That's it!
Install one of the free podcatchers on your computer (works on both PC and Mac). Your options include Apple's iTunes, or other services such as Microsoft's Zune Marketplace, Juice (multiplatform), Doppler (Windows), Podget (Linux) and Podracer (Linux).
At this point, you will already be able to listen to podcast audio from your computer. If you want to make your podcasts portable, you will need to transfer them from your computer to a portable media device. Check your application for details.
How do I subscribe to a podcast?
To subscribe to a podcast, copy the URL provided by each series website and paste it into your podcasting software (e.g. iTunes, Juice). You will automatically receive the podcast each time it's published.
