KBDI is more than just Channel 12! The station also multicasts on three digital channels:
- KBDI-DTV on Channel 12.1 - This channel provides a simulcast of KBDI's regular programming.
- KBDI-DOC on Channel 12.2 - This exclusive broadcast of the DOCUMENTARY CHANNEL features uninterrupted documentary programming.
- KBDI-MHZ on Channel 12.3 - This channel features MHz NETWORKS – a lineup of programs from around the world, providing diverse cultural perspectives for a globally-minded audience.
KBDI's three digital channels are broadcast over the air for free. Anyone in KBDI's main transmitter reception areas can get them. These areas include:
- Denver-Metro
- The Northern Front Range – including Greeley and Ft. Collins
- Most of North-Eastern and Eastern Colorado.
KBDI's digital services will not be available in most of Boulder, Colorado Springs or Pueblo until the station converts its current analog translators to digital. This will not take place until 2009 at the earliest.
Receiving the Digital Channels
You don’t need a new digital television to receive our digital channels, but if you already have one, you’re half way there. It doesn’t matter whether you currently have cable or a satellite TV; you can still get these free over-the-air channels in addition to your other services.
How to Tune In
If you have an older, analog or digital TV, here’s how to get started:
- Check that your TV has an available set of composite inputs. This is a row of three RCA-type connection points. The video is usually yellow, and there are usually two audio inputs, one white and one red.
NOTE: If you don’t have an available set of inputs, you’ll need a newer TV in order to receive our digital broadcast.
- If your television has an available set of inputs, the next thing you need to do is purchase an ATSC receiver (simply called an HDTV receiver) and a digital antenna. In general, costs are as follows:
- HDTV receivers will cost between $130 and $300.
- Good, indoor digital antennas will cost between $20 and $50.
- Outdoor antennas have a broader price range, somewhere between $20 and $200.
Although KBDI does not recommend any particular manufacturer or vendor over another, the station is providing the following links to give you some idea of prices and availability:
- Once you’ve purchased the HDTV receiver and antenna, the installation is simple:
- Connect the output of the receiver to the composite inputs on your TV.
- Connect the antenna to the antenna input on the receiver.
- Turn on the TV, select the input you are using, turn on the receiver, and follow the simple (really, they are) set up instructions.
- You will then be receiving all three KBDI digital channels, as well as the digital channels available from all other broadcasters in your area.
If you have a newer TV, with an ATSC / HDTV tuner built in, it’s even simpler:
- Purchase and connect a digital antenna to the antenna input on your TV.
- Select the antenna/ATSC tuner input on your TV.
- Follow the set up instructions.
- Start watching!
